Main events: Family History Research: Italian Ancestors (8 & 31 October) Learn how to conduct family history research and expand your family tree by using census data, city directories, historical photos, land records and other resources. Instructor: Richard Le Book Discussion: Beautiful Ruins (Wednesday, 15 October, 7-8 PM) Joins us as we discuss acclaimed, award-winning author Jess Walter’s novel Beautiful Ruins, his funniest, most romantic, and most purely enjoyable novel yet. The Art and Spark of Children’s Books (Thursday, 16 October, 12 noon to 1 PM). Writers, illustrators and publishers discuss the creativity behind Italian fairytales. Italian Movie Night – Life is Beautiful (Tuesday, 14 October, 6-8 PM) In this WW II tragicomedy, Guido (Roberto Benigni) must rely on his colourful imagination and irresistible sense of humor to save his wife and son from an unthinkable fate. Winner of 3 Academy Awards, including one for Best Actor Roberto Benigni. In Italian with English subtitles. Rated R. 116 minutes. Italian Movie Night – The Priest’s Wife (Tuesday, 21 October, 6-8 PM) In this Italian comedy, Father Don Mario (Marcello Mastroianni) has pledged obedience and celibacy. Alas, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Especially when lovely Valeria Billi (Sophia Loren) sets her dark brown eyes and romantic designs on him. Director: Dino Risi. Italian Movie Night – La Traviata (Tuesday, 28 October, 6-8 PM) Tenor Plácido Domingo and soprano Teresa Stratas star in director Franco Zeffirelli's lushly cinematic version of Verdi's opera La Traviata ("The Woman Gone Astray"), a story of doomed love in 1840s Paris.
