Pino Masnata, Futurist: A Life in Science and Art

Pino Masnata, Futurist: A Life in Science and Art

The San Francisco Italian Institute of Culture will host a talk on the extraordinary career of Pino Masnata.

Dr. Roberto Masnata of Stradella, Italy, will speak about his father's unusual pairing of medicine and avant-garde art, his experience as a surgeon for Italian troops in Ethiopia and Russia, and his unique position in the Italian Futurist movement as Marinetti's most trusted friend, amanuensis, and physician.
Pino Masnata (1901-1968), surgeon, poet, dramatist, and radio artist, is best known as the co-author of the 1933 Futurist Radio Manifesto with F. T. Marinetti, founder of the Futurist art movement. Among the most influential art documents of the twentieth century, the poetic Radio Manifesto enjoys iconic status among artists committed to rethinking art through electronic media.

The Manifesto proposes a new art of RADIA that will construct architecture from silences, seduce listeners with the vibrations of a diamond, and stage combat zones in the ether where noise from one locale battles against noise from another to create sounds never heard before.

Masnata's collaboration with composer Carmine Guarino produced one of the very first operas written specifically for radio, Il cuore di Wanda (Wanda's Heart), which was broadcast in 1931.

Margaret Fisher, translator of Pino Masnata's RADIA (not radio), and Charles Amirkhanian, composer, poet, Artistic Director of radiOM and Other Minds of San Francisco, will join Dr. Roberto Masnata to discuss the legacy of Futurist art in poetry and the electronic arts, and the prescience of the Futurist "wireless imagination" in the context of twenty-first century technology.
