The Italian Garden Project

The Italian Garden Project

Experience the beauty and charm of the traditional Italian American backyard vegetable garden and learn about its relevance for reconnecting to our food, our families, and the earth. Mary Menniti, founder of The Italian Garden Project™, will share how these gardens serve as glimpses into the past that can lead to a brighter, more sustainable future.

Growing up with an Italian immigrant grandfather, Mary came to know and value his self-reliant lifestyle, his wise use of resources, and his extensive gardening knowledge. She founded The Italian Garden Project™ to preserve old world food and gardening traditions and demonstrate that the wisdom the Italian American gardener possesses is relevant for today and for future generations. Mary has documented gardens throughout the country including Brooklyn, the Bronx, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, San Jose and Sacramento. Due to her efforts, an Italian American vegetable garden is now included in the Archives of American Garden at the Smithsonian Institution.

Mary is from Pittsburgh, PA and is currently living in Davis, CA while she documents Northern California Italian American gardening heritage.
