Handel in Rome

Handel in Rome

Artistic Director Paul Flight leads the award-winning California Bach Society in three dazzling choral works from GF Handel's 1707 Vespers service at the Carmelite church of Santa Maria in Montesanto in Rome.

In 1706, the young Handel made his way from Hamburg to Rome, where he was soon enjoying the patronage of three of Rome's most powerful cardinals. This concert features the three large-scale Vesper psalm settings from the heyday of the composer's Italian sojourn: Nisi Dominus, Laudate Pueri Dominum, and the justly famous Dixit Dominus.

The 30-voice choir will be joined by soloists Phoebe Rosquist and Caroline Jou Armitage, soprano; Paul Flight, countertenor; James Hogan, tenor; Jeffrey Fields, baritone; and a Baroque ensemble of strings, oboes, and organ.

The California Bach Society, a 30-voice chamber chorus, was recently awarded "Best Baroque Performance" by San Francisco Classical Voice for its 2016 production of Bach's St. Matthew Passion. Founded in 1971, CBS has specialized in historically informed performances since 1998 and has established a reputation for its interpretations of Renaissance and Baroque choral music. The chorus presents four concerts each year in San Francisco, Palo Alto, and Berkeley.
