A Night at the (Home-) Movies

A Night at the (Home-) Movies

Join us for an evening of fun as we take a trip down memory lane while watching the intimate yet universal footage that comprise home movies!

Here is the program:

  • Paolo Simoni, Director of Archivio Nazionale del Film di Famiglia, Bologna will present his work in Italy, and show a selection of images of the Lombardi Family.
  • Ron Merk, Director of Film and Cultural Programs at the Metro Theatre Center Foundation, will offer a preview of a rare 1931 color film showing a folk costume event in Naples, Italy.
  • Lou DeMatteis, photo-journalist and director of Crimebuster, will display an original 8mm projector and show some of his treasured home movies. He will also present a glimpse of San Francisco as it was before and after the 1906 earthquake.
  • Antonella Bonfanti will bring some clips from her personal collection, and will discuss San Francisco's unique engagement with the home movie trend. Antonella has been active in the moving image archives and preservation field since 2008.

This is the first step towards hosting a day of home movies from the San Francisco Italian-American community, with the aim of bringing a community together and promoting culture through cherished films curated by amateur collectors.

This event is a collaborative effort between the IIC and the Archivio Nazionale del Film di Famiglia (The Italian Amateur Film Archive), founded in 2002, with the mission to collect and preserve amateur and family film, an audiovisual heritage that is still hidden and largely inaccessible. The Metro Theatre Center Foundation supports a wide range of arts and social issues through its grants and support programs. This includes a wide range of the arts, including filmmaking, theatre, individual grants to artists working on personal projects, as well as social issues such as endangered homeless youth and low-income seniors.

Support is also provided by Rick Prelinger of Internet Archive and various people affiliated with Home Movie Day, a series of events held worldwide to showcase amateur films and filmmaking.
