Italian Design Day | Francesca Molteni: A Tribute to Alessandro Mendini

The Consulate General of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco, in collaboration with DZINE, are pleased to present filmmaker, director and design curator Francesca Molteni, ambassador of Italian Design Day in the World 2019. Now in its 3rd edition, Italian Design Day in the World is project launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the purpose of highlighting the excellence of Italian design around the world.

The event will start with the screening of I Wanted to be Walt Disney (Volevo essere Walt Disney, Italy, 2017, 35 min), Francesca Molteni’s homage to Alessandro Mendini (1931-2019). Creator of a parallel universe, ironic and tragic, intimate and able to speak to the world in any language—architecture, art, design, writing, and critique—Mendini was an actor in a revolutionary movement that started in Italy in the late 1960s pursuing social revolution through design. In her film, Francesca Molteni explores Mendini’s iconic collaborations with Alessi, Bisazza, and Swatch, among others, resulting in creations that reinvented the language of Italian design. The film features extensive interviews with Mendini himself, along with influential figures from the world of contemporary design and architecture including Joseph Grima, Anna Gili, Germano Celant, and Giovanna Mazzocchi, to name a few.

The presentation will be moderated by Austin Forbord.
