Primo Levi: Full Face and Profile

The year 2019 marks the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Primo Levi, a writer and chemist who, like no one else before him, was able to represent the Shoah and its echoes in literature. Levi’s precision and linguistic clarity make him one of the most significant Italian writers of the last century.

Professor Marco Belpoliti, a leading expert on Primo Levi, will hold a lecture on his latest book Primo Levi, di fronte di profilo (Primo Levi, Full Face and Profile).

The event is moderated by Alexandra Amati.

Marco Belpoliti, an Italian writer and essayist, writes for both La Stampa and L'Espresso. He is coeditor of The Voice of Memory: Primo Levi Interviews, 1961–1987 (New York: New Press, 2001) and author of, among other books, L'occhio di Calvino (Calvino's Eye) (Milan: Einaudi, 1996). Currently he is a Literary Criticism and Visual Cultures professor at the University of Bergamo.

Alexandra Amati is an Italian musicologist specializing in Renaissance music, opera, feminist criticism, and German Baroque vocal music. She holds a Laurea in Slavic Studies and Philology from the University of Pisa (Italy) and both MA and PhD in musicology from Harvard University. Alexandra grew up with a steady diet of and a close connection with the writings of Primo Levi and other Jewish writers of the Holocaust and its aftermath. Se questo è un uomo, Il sistema periodico, I sommersi e i salvati and most of the others are books that are very dear and powerful, and have shaped her adolescence and lifelong activism.
