Italian Excellence: Illustrators for Gianni Rodari

The year 2020 marks the centennial of the birth, on October 23, 1920, of Gianni Rodari, one of the most innovative children’s authors and the first Italian to win the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1970. The Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco and Bologna Children’s Book Fair will honour the anniversary with the exhibit Illustrators for Gianni Rodari.

Re-printed year after year, Rodari’s works continue to be relevant. Twenty-one Italian illustrators who have interpreted Rodari over the years are the theme of this new edition of Italian Excellence, the exhibition first staged in 2015 and presented in 10 countries to great acclaim.

Organized by the Bologna Chidren's Book Fair and the Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco and the Emilia-Romagna Region, the current exhibition Italian Excellence: Illustrators for Gianni Rodari features works by Italian illustrators ranging from historic figures and famous contemporary artists to the younger generation: Bruno Munari, Emanuele Luzzati, Altan, Beatrice Alemagna, Gaia Stella, Olimpia Zagnoli, Manuel Fior, Alessandro Sanna, Valerio Vitali, Simona Mulazzani, Chiara Armellini, Anna Laura Cantone, Fulvio Testa, Maria Chiara Di Giorgio, Giulia Orecchia, Nicoletta Costa, Federico Maggioni, Francesca Ghermandi, Pia Valentinis, Vittoria Facchini, and Elenia Beretta.

Each illustrator is represented by three works, which are included in the catalogue published by Einaudi Ragazzi, holder of the world rights for Rodari’s writings.

Illustrators for Gianni Rodari will be inaugurated September 25, 2019 in Portland, Oregon, after which it will travel to the Italian Cultural Institute in San Francisco (date to be confirmed), and it will subsequently presented at BCBF at the end of March.

This exhibition has been created by the Italian Cultural Insitute of San Francisco and Bologna Children's Book Fair, with the cooperation of the Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco and Emilia-Romagna Region.
