In anticipation of Italian Design Day, we are pleased to showcase a program organized by Milano Design Film Festival.
1891, 1917, 1935, 1983. These are the birth years of Gio Ponti, Ettore Sottsass, Jr., Tobia Scarpa and Antonio Aricò—four of the leading architects of Italian design. This program, organized by Milano Design Film Festival, connects the dots of these major players and milestones of Italian design from its early days to the present. Although Ponti and Sottsass are no longer with us, their work continues to enrich our world, and their objects and furnishings remain relevant, both as highly collectible antiques, but also as part of the evolution of contemporary design. The interviews with these great designers feel as fresh and relevant as if they had been filmed today, charged with the spirit of commitment and innovation of these trailblazing innovators. It is this commitment that made them “masters”—still quoted and still inspiring rich discussion and design innovation today. This film celebrates the creative process and the fluid connections between handicraft and industrial processes, the past, the present and the future.
