WAITING LIST

“In the seventies, as a young man, I started the "Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare" (New Company of Popular Singing), a musical band that took inspiration from unknown southern singers and started traveling around the world. Then "Brigands of Southern History" was formed, after that "Migrants from the Mediterranean" took place and finally "Taranta Power," a movement that marked the entry of Italian ethnic music into World Music. Always an ethnic minority music, a music that counts for very little in the business of global civilization. My latest work, from 2022, is called "Vento Popolare." It represents my starting point: the belief that through music, the logic of beauty and human contact can counter the logic of profit.’’

Eugenio Bennato established the "Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare" in the seventies and "Musica Nova" in 1976. In the nineties he created "Taranta Power," a movement that brings Italian ethnic music into the international network of World Music. The most significant record publications are Brigante se more (1980), Taranta Power (1998), Che il Mediterraneo sia (2002), Sponda sud (2007), La Questione Meridionale (2011), Canzoni di Contrabbando (2016 Anthology). Da che Sud è Sud is his latest album, released in winter 2017. In 2018 Bennato played in the great capitals of the African-Arab world: Tunis, Rabat, Cairo, Algiers, Tangier, Oran. He also participated in the Sete Sois Sete Luas festival in Portugal, and was invited to Brussel by the European Parliament to play on Human Rights Day. On December 1, 2018, he celebrated the twentieth anniversary of Taranta Power with a large festival in Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples. In 2020 a new album, Qualcuno sulla terra, and the single W chi non conta niente came out. Vento popolare is the title of his new album, due out in the fall 2022.
