CINEDAY "al femminile"




The Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco is pleased to present CINEDAY al femminile, a series of productions directed by Italian female filmmakers.

This series is dedicated to Italian director Cecila Mangini (1927-2021), considered the first Italian female documentary filmmaker, and it is available to the first 300 to register. Please note that the link and password you'll receive upon registration are valid only for the date and time of each movie. The registration links will be sent out one at a time, weekly, in the IIC newsletter and website.



cecilia manginiCecilia Mangini was born on July 31, 1927 in Mola di Bari, Apulia, Italy. She was a writer and director. Her first documentary, Ignoti alla Città (Unknown to the City), was released in 1958. Written by Pier Paolo Pasolini, the film focused on adolescents in Rome's suburbs after World War II. She is known for All'armi siam fascisti! (1962), Antonio Gramsci: The Days of Prison (1977) and Klon (1992). She was married to Lino Del Fra. She died on January 21, 2021 in Rome, Lazio, Italy.

In the middle of the night, a mobile phone rings. It’s the sign: Ismail awaits until the third ring, then he goes to a call centre to call back. Far, from Afghanistan, a man answers: he claims to be an uncle and hands the phone to a woman. She is Ismail’s mother, who denies to know him. She doesn’t have any news from her son since he was a little boy run away with his older brother from civil wars and Talibans. The woman made her children leave the country on their own, afraid they could get killed. Further the recognition that happens after many secret phone calls, Ismail’s mother disappears.

Divided between her son’s desires and the will to protect him from the judgment of others, which can be fierce, Simona arrives on the day of the party full of expectations and anxieties. While both parents and children arrive at the party, we start composing a very diverse array of people with very different views, and while the children play in the living room, the adults in the kitchen pleasantly hate each other. Until an unexpected performance by Filippo breaks the mold and triggers a domino effect of actions and reactions that bring the party to derail…

With the help of a wise and seraphic psychoanalyst, Flavia struggles regaining independence and self-confidence, tackling numerous driving tests and awkward approaches to auto-eroticism.
