LITaly: New Italian Writing in Translation
On the occasion of Litquake, San Francisco Literary Festival

Over the past 50 years, contemporary Italian authors familiar to American readers were largely limited to Umberto Eco, Italo Calvino, Primo Levi, and a handful of others. But thanks in part to the popularity of author Elena Ferrante—the so-called “Ferrante Effect”—the work of a new generation of Italian writers, especially women writers, is arriving in the United States. To support this growing interest, the Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco has commissioned and published LITaly, a brand-new anthology with substantial excerpts from the books of nine Italian authors, translated into English for the first time and enhanced with illustrations created expressly for the project by Roman graphic design studios RAMI and Meneghello.

Join us for this hour of readings and discussion, with LITaly editor Marco Cassini, translator Olivia Sears, and LITaly contributors Ilaria Gaspari and Matteo Trevisani. This event is an adjunct to the 21st Annual Week of the Italian Language, which runs October 18-23, 2021.

LITaly has been created and produced by the Italian Cultural Insititute of San Francisco. It will be presented as part of a focus on the importance of translation on the occasion of the Litquake Literary Festival, which the IIC San Francisco supports every year.
