digital art > ARTIFICIAL BOTANY

The Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco is pleased to present Artificial Botany, an ongoing project by fuse* exploring the latent expressive capacity of botanical illustrations through the use of machine learning algorithms. Exhibiting in the spaces of IIC @INNOVIT in San Francisco from May 11th to September 1st, 2023, the show offers a comprehensive look on the series and includes, between others, images based on the illustrations of Italian naturalist Ulisse Aldrovandi and the latest and still unreleased series generated from artificial illustrations, highlighting the potential infinite loop of generating artificial illustrations from synthetic, botanical artifacts. Emphasizing the contrasts and similarities of the generated outputs, the exhibited series crystallize the brief moments of transitions between one botanical form and another, translating on paper the multidimensional space of the neural network.
