Join us for an exclusive online lecture on The Eurydice Problem with musicologist Alexandra Amati. Professor Amati will examine the differences in men’s and women’s music since the birth of the opera genre, as well as the ways in which misogyny and antifeminism have influenced the development of operatic plots, casting, and staging over the centuries.
ABOUT
Alexandra Amati, originally from Italy, studied at the University of Pisa (Slavic Studies and Philology), Conservatory of Music of Lucca (piano and composition), and Harvard University (MA and PhD in musicology). Her scholarly interests include the Italian Renaissance, Italian opera, Feminist criticism, and more. She is a Professor Emerita at the University of San Francisco, where she created the music program and taught for 27 years. She is also a lecturer for many Bay Area organizations, including the SF Symphony, the SF Opera, the SF Bach Choir, Philharmonia Baroque, and others. She is currently at Harvard, teaching and doing research, and has just finished a book on women and misogyny in opera.
