As part of the enhancement of relations between Italy and the USA, the AMERIGO Association promotes the AMERIGO National Award of the Four Freedoms, which is now in its seventh edition. It was born in 2016 in Florence on the proposal of the AMERIGO chapter of the Florentine capital with the aim of enhancing and spreading the four freedoms mentioned by President Franklin Delano Roosvelt through literary works that refer, even indirectly, to the freedom of opinion, of religion, freedom from Need and Fear. It was January 6, 1941 when the President inserted them at the end of his State of the Union address stating that it was the duty of the United States to spread them “everywhere in the world” against dictatorships and authoritarian governments.
That speech remained and still remains extremely relevant. For the best dissemination of the four principles of Freedom throughout the national territory, since the second edition, the Award, which takes place annually, has left Florence to become itinerant in the cities of Milan, Naples and Rome and where the territorial chapters of Amerigo in correspondence with the Consulates General of the United States of America in Italy. The choice of the four works to combine with the four freedoms takes place among those reported by the authors, by the journalists awarded with the Amerigo Journalism Award, by the publishing houses, but also and above all by the members and friends of Amerigo.
This year the award will take place in Rome and will see a live streamed talk on the Association’s Facebook page, Monday 20 June from 10 to 12:30 PST, and entitled Culture and integrated promotion as terrain common between Italy and the United States and where on this occasion they can also discuss the prizes of the four freedoms and its authors.
The Award, now in its 14th edition, is a recognition for those journalists who tell Italians about America, contributing with their daily commitment to continuous and comprehensive information, to maintain those close ties that bind our country to the United States of America.
THE AMERIGO ASSOCIATION
Funded in 2007, the AMERIGO Association brings together the Italian Alumni of the Cultural Exchange Programs of the American State Department. AMERIGO is also part of a wider Eurasian network, ENAM (European Network of American Alumni) of 46 Associations and aims to strengthen the understanding of the political, cultural, economic and social dynamics between the two sides of the Atlantic. . The Association is the promoter of some programs that already see it collaborating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, with the Italian Embassy in Washington and with the US Embassy in Rome. The most important and prestigious of the projects that AMERIGO is carrying out is certainly the Transatlantic Investment Committee.
