In his recent books, physicist and inventor Federico Faggin advances a powerful idea that merges spirituality and quantum mechanics, resulting in a new understanding of consciousness and free will. In this panel, after an introduction by Federico Faggin, philosopher Massimiliano Tomba and physicist Irfan Siddiqi will contribute their expert point of view on the matter. The discussion is moderated by planetologist Cristina Morea Dalle Ore.

Federico Faggin is a physicist, inventor, and entrepreneur born in Italy who invented the MOS Silicon Gate Technology and designed the world’s first microprocessors. He founded Zilog, Synaptics, and the Faggin Foundation for the scientific study of consciousness. Received National Medal of Tech. and Innovation from Pres. Obama, and Cavaliere di Gran Croce from Pres. Mattarella.

Irfan Siddiqi is a Professor and Douglas Giancoli Chair of the Physics Department at UC Berkeley, and a Faculty Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory where he directs the Advanced Quantum Testbed. His research group focuses on the development of advanced superconducting circuits for quantum information processing, including computation and metrology. Irfan is an elected Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a fellow of the American Physical Society where he is the recipient of its George E. Valley Prize and Joseph F. Keithley Award. He received his undergraduate degree in chemistry and physics at Harvard University, and a PhD in applied physics from Yale University.

Massimiliano Tomba is Chair and Professor in the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is the author of numerous books and articles on continental philosophy and political theory. His recent publications include Marx’s Temporalities (Brill, 2012) and Insurgent Universality: An Alternative Legacy of Modernity (Oxford University Press, 2019). His forthcoming book, Revolution and Restoration: The Politics of Anachronism, is currently in production with Fordham University Press.

Cristina Morea Dalle Ore is a planetologist, as well as a remote sensing and AI expert.
A graduate of Padua University she has worked for many years at NASA leveraging AI to study the composition of icy surfaces with the ultimate goal of understanding the origin of life. She has applied her knowledge at Bayer Crop Science Corporation studying Agriculture. Most recently she has taken an interest in applying sensor technology to the human body.
