The duo, composed of cellist Ludovica Rana and pianist Maddalena Giacopuzzi, was formed in 2018 and has performed extensively in important festivals and concert associations, such as the Accademia Filarmonica Romana, Società dei Concerti di Milano, Accademia Filarmonica di Verona. In 2021 the duo Rana – Giacopuzzi won the DV Young Sounds competition by the record label Da Vinci Records thanks to which their debut CD entitled Affresco italiano was published.

Ludovica studied at the Conservatory of Italian Switzerland, the Menuhin Academy, the Pavia Cello Academy and the Accademia di Santa Cecilia. She currently teaches Chamber Music at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Nocera Terinese and plays a Claude Augustine Miremont from 1860.

Maddalena studied at the Conservatory of Bolzano, the Incontri col Maestro Academy in Imola, and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. She teaches Piano at the Paisiello Conservatory in Taranto.

PROGRAM NOTES

Viva Puccini is a Puccini medley transcribed by Vincenzo Rana for the hundredth anniversary of the death of the great Italian opera composer: themes from Madama Butterfly, Turandot, Gianni Schicchi, Bohème and Tosca follow one another in an unusual and original ensemble for cello and piano.

In the 4 Lieder eine fahrendenn Gesellen by G. Mahler, descriptive moments alternate with allegorical figures imbued with a pessimistic existential unease. The themes mentioned here will appear fully in the First Symphony not as self-citations, but as enunciations of an authentic and well-defined style.

The Sonata by J. Brahms, an iconic piece of the 19th century, is the most authoritative representation of the chamber music that is nourished by profound respect for the masters of the past and is distinguished by a rigorous structure and careful formal articulation. A piece that testifies not so much to the research in the name of stylistic or harmonic innovation, but rather to an enrichment of a pre-existing tradition. Brahms, with his fidelity to form and thematic coherence, with his ability to synthesise past and present, has left an indelible mark on the classical repertoire, inspiring generations of musicians and listeners.

The program ends with Le Grand Tango by A. Piazzolla, written in 1982 at the height of his popularity in the original version for cello and piano, dedicated to the great Mstislav Rostropovich, which gave its first performance in New Orleans in 1990. In the 1950s, when Astor Piazzolla went to Paris to study classical composition, the tango of his native Argentina was not considered suitable for the concert stages of Europe. Fortunately, the formidable composition teacher Nadia Boulanger encouraged her Argentine student to draw precisely from those roots. Twenty-five years after Piazzolla’s death, The Sound of Piazzolla confirms that the founder of Tango Nuevo left behind a unique musical style that sounds just as fresh and vibrant today.
