In his delightful documentary, Sonaggios—Italy’s contribution to 2025 SFFILM Festival—director Pietro Mereu takes us to Sardinia, where, in Tonara, two families carry on the tradition of crafting cowbells, an ancient instrument that fulfills multiple social functions: sound deterrent for theft, calming for livestock and symbol of honor and prestige for shepherds. Aware that theirs are the last shops standing in a town that used to be rife with them, the families seek to widen their customer base through online sales, social media, and identifying other uses for the bells. They also decide to work together to ensure the survival of their craft.

Director Pietro Mereu is expected to attend for a post-screening Q&A.
