Via Francigena

The ancient road from Canterbury to Rome

The historic Via Francigena, far less famous and less travelled than the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, is 1600km long and traverses Italy from north to south on a fascinating route extraordinarily rich in natural beauty, artistic and architectural treasures and cultural and spiritual traces. It is one of our country’s national treasures. Its main branch, which went from Canterbury to Rome, bears witness to the importance of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages and has been declared a ‘Cultural Route’ by the Council of Europe.
The speaker, Dr Alberto Alberti, is an expert on this historic route. His presentation, aided by images and video, will introduce the entire itinerary while focusing particularly on its final stretch: the approach to Rome through the Latium region. A video on Latium will follow.

The project is organised by the ‘Gruppo dei Dodici’ (Group of Twelve) association, itself part of the Italian ‘Rete dei Cammini’ (Historic Route Network), which promotes awareness and stewardship of ecological, cultural, social and spiritual values as well as the identification and development of pedestrian or bicycle routes within its territory.
